Chief Warrant Officer Braedyn Tann

Name Braedyn Tann

Position Senior Support Craft Pilot

Rank Chief Warrant Officer

Character Information

Gender Male
Species Human/Orion/Vulcanoid Rigelian/El-Aurian
Age Born April 2272

Physical Appearance

Height 5' 11" (1.8m)
Weight 172lb (78kg)
Hair Color Dark Brown/Black
Eye Color Dark Brown
Physical Description Braedyn has had the Orion skin tone bred out of him, his eyebrows do not appear Vulcanoid, and neither do his ears. Externally, he can pass as Human. He got sturdiness and increased strength from his Orion and Vulcanoid Rigelian genes, and an increased lifespan from the Vulcanoid Rigelian and El-Aurian genes. It is estimated that Braedyn will live to be roughly 300 or even as much as 400 years old. He is slim and wiry and in great physical condition. He’s agile and light on his feet and graceful in his movements. While he’s approachable and often friendly, one can sense that he’s a dangerous man. This is especially true when he intentionally conveys this through his facial expression and body language. Around his neck on a chain, usually hidden by his uniform when he’s working, Braedyn wears a pendant of the Great Bird of the Galaxy, a deity of sorts that Braedyn has been known to seek guidance from.

Though he is 124 years of age, his outward physical appearance is that of a human male somewhere in his 30s.

NOTE: For those of you that don’t know this, Gene Roddenberry was called “The Great Bird of the Galaxy” by the cast and crew of the original series.

Family

Spouse Kaylin (Ex-Wife, Deceased)
Children Daniel (Son), Shoshana (Daughter-in-Law)

Rachel (Granddaughter)
Father Argelian
Mother Iliana
Brother(s) None that Braedyn knows of. His mother may have other children, but given the size of even just the known galaxy, it seems unlikely he will ever encounter them by anything other than the wildest of chances.
Sister(s) None that Braedyn knows of. His mother may have other children, but give the size of even just the known galaxy, it seems unlikely that he will ever encounter them by anything other than the wildest of chances.
Other Family Great Grandfather (Gideon Tann, Human, Deceased), Great Grandmother (Zhelli Harrunni, Orion, Deceased), Grandmother (Sarah Tann, Human/Orion), Other great grandparents, great aunts and uncles, aunts and uncles, cousins, and so on, by both blood and marriage. Gideon and Zhelli had children with other partners, while Sarah Tann joined a large Vulcanoid Rigelian clan and, as was the custom, had many husbands simultaneously and had children with most of them, and those children had children, etc. Additionally, Braedyn knows nothing of his mother's family.

Personality & Traits

General Overview NOTE: The formal ways to address a Chief Warrant Officer are "Sir" and "Mister". Informally, Chief Warrant Officers are sometimes called "Chief". Chief Warrant Officers are above all other Warrant Officers and all Non-Commissioned Officers (all ranks of Chief Petty Officer, all ranks of Sergeant, Corporal, etc.) and all Enlisted personnel, but are below Ensign.
===========

Braedyn Tann is a man on a long journey. For the most part, he’s not in a hurry to get to the end of it. He’s already outlived childhood friends who got old and died, while he aged much more slowly. Others, including family, he’s well on his way to outliving. He’s on his third career and he tries to keep broadening his horizons.

Braedyn fell in love with flying after his father made him join the Polar City Civil Aerospace Patrol at age 12 as a CAP Cadet. His time as a CAP Cadet and later as a CAP officer taught him the sense of purpose that service can give a person. That desire to serve drove him to join Starfleet after the Cardassian Union attacked Setlik III and kicked off a long series of border conflicts known now as the Cardassian Border Wars, and to stay in after the last treaties were signed in 2370. This led to his service in the Federation-Klingon Wars and the Dominion War.

Braedyn is more than just his job. He enjoys physical pursuits, such as martial arts and he forced himself to learn a few simple ballroom dances he could do at formal gatherings. He enjoys reading and enjoys history. He very much enjoys music. Braedyn experimented with guitar as a child, but almost quit. Then he was introduced to the unique 9 string Baroque Guitar (aka Spanish Guitar) and he became hooked. He plays Classical, Baroque, and other Historical Earth Music and their analogs in other cultures. He plays mostly for relaxation and his own enjoyment, sometimes in front of his friends and colleagues informally. Early in his education, he wavered between Aerospace Science and Music, and finally settled on majoring in Aerospace Studies while minoring in Music.

Braedyn is cool under pressure, friendly, easy going. He’s intelligent, but is not an intellectual bully. In fact, he’s not a bully of any kind and won’t tolerate bullying behavior.

Braedyn has family connections with Vulcanoid Rigelians throughout the Rigel System, and with Orions throughout the Rigel System and beyond. He has family connections to Orion Caju (Orion private corporations) and the Orion Syndicate. Some of his Orion family members have financial concerns in the pleasure palaces and casinos Rigel II and other ports in the Rigel System (some legal, others somewhat less than legal), while his Vulcanoid Rigelian family has many agricultural concerns on Rigel IV and Rigel V, including a successful botanical pharmaceutical operation. Braedyn himself has steered clear of the illegal activity his family is involved in for the most part, except where he couldn’t avoid it. His relatives are what they are. Braedyn can either accept this and them and have a family, or shun them and be alone. Shady or not, these people accepted him, loved him, and supported him. That doesn’t keep him from getting a queasy feeling even just thinking about some of the things his family gets up to. Luckily his Orion family got out of the slave trade long ago, as well as dangerous narcotics. They prefer other forms of contraband.
Strengths & Weaknesses Braedyn is a natural pilot. His piloting instincts are spot on and his reflexes and response time are quick. When things get difficult, Braedyn doesn't lose his cool.

Braedyn maintains a high level of physical fitness. He is strong and agile. He has studied several martial arts over the years and continues to practice a blended version of them that is ever evolving.

Braedyn is highly intelligent and knowledgeable in the area of Aerospace Studies, including Engineering. Though his degree is from many decades ago, he has done his best to remain current and was able to do so well enough to qualify for Starfleet's prestigious test pilot school.

Braedyn was deeply affected when his mother abandoned him and his father when Braedyn was very small, more so by her absence that by the act itself, which he barely remembers. With such wide and scattered roots on his father's side of the family, and none on his mother's side, Braedyn feels perpetually out of balance in his personal life. This had a very detrimental effect on his marriage, as evidenced by the fact that it lasted only about five years. This lack of personal equilibrium continues to affect his personal relationships to this day.

Outwardly, Braedyn seems fully recovered from his ordeal on Chin'toka during the Dominion War. And in many ways, he is. However, nightmares still creep into his sleep, causing him to relive the what was arguably the worst period of his life in vivid detail. Not every night, but often enough to be significant. He'd talk about it more, he's not afraid of that, but when he wakes, the substance of these nightmares dissipates like smoke in the breeze, leaving only the feelings of terror, sadness, rage, and loss.

Braedyn can't stand snakes. They creep him out. They're about the only thing that will make him lose his cool.
Ambitions Braedyn has a long journey ahead of him still and is in no rush to get to the end of it. He's achieved a lot in his life so far, personally and professionally.

A personal goal of his is to finally learn more about his mother's people.
Hobbies & Interests Martial Arts, Music (Baroque Guitar), Earth Music: Baroque, Renaissance, Classical, and other styles, Reading, History, Poetry, Theater.

Personal History NOTE: The Rigel System information comes from a paper and pencil ST RPG sourcebook called Star Trek: Worlds. I have the pdf of it in G-Drive. I use it for inspiration for character backgrounds. I particularly like their version of the Rigel System and the Vulcanoid Rigelians and the Orions. Star Trek’s writers have created multiple races from systems referred to as “Rigel”, and they don’t really make all that much sense. Editor shortcomings, really. But I think this can work. The Vulcanoid Rigelian race idea used by ST: Worlds I believe came from a reference Doctor McCoy makes in the TOS episode “Journey to Babel” about Rigelians being genetically similar to Vulcans. Some ST novels and then this sourcebook took it from there. I think at least some of that can be used without breaking canon. Bending just a little bit maybe, but I don’t think breaking it altogether is required.

Braedyn Tann’s ancestors were among the first human settlers on Rigel IV, founding citizens of the human colony of Polar City, back before the colony was a member of the Federation. When the humans arrived on Rigel IV, it was already populated by a Vulcanoid Rigelian settlement, an Orion settlement and of course the Kaylar tribes that are found on many of the inhabitable planets in the Rigel System. Kaylar are the original natives of the system, with the Orions (also found on many of the planets in the Rigel System) arrived later and used the Kaylar as mamluks (slave-soldiers). The Vulcanoid Rigelians are an off-shoot of of the Debrune, who are an off-shoot of the Vulcan refugees who would eventually become the Romulans. They initially settled on Rigel V, then spread out to Rigel II and Rigel IV. At some point, the Andorians also settled on Rigel IV. Rigel IV is balkanized. Some of the colonies there are members of the UFP, such as the Human, Andorian, and Vulcanoid Rigelian colonies, while the Orions refused to join.

Braedyn’s paternal great grandfather was a Human trader from Polar City. He was bored with life in Polar CIty, and spent most of his time in Sathura, the Orion colony. While he never dealt in slaves, he dealt in just about everything else. In 2202, one of his Orion lovers gave birth to his child. That child, raised primarily in Sathura, was as much a hedonist as her father, but over time found that the Vulcanoid Rigelian settlement of Altama suited her better than Sathura or Polar City. She fell in love there and in 2242, Braedyn’s father was born.

Braedyn’s father was very intelligent and agriculturally and scientifically inclined. As part of an educational exchange between Polar City and Altama, he traveled to Polar City University. There he learned Human methods of hydroponics, while sharing what he’d learned growing up and studying in Altama. In Polar City, he met a woman who appeared to Human, but that he later discovered was not, but not until Braedyn was an adult. The genetic information for Braedyn’s mother was not in any database the hospital in Polar City could find. He had a child with her in 2272. That child was Braedyn Tann.

Braedyn’s mother left when Braedyn was very young. Braedyn hardly remembers her. Braedyn’s father was able to provide for his son’s needs, and eventually remarried.

After the Enterprise 1701-B encountered El-Aurian refugees and their genetic information was added to the Federation databases, Braedyn’s family doctor was able to identify the DNA contributed by Braedyn’s mother as El-Aurian.

Braedyn was deeply affected by his mother’s absence. To distract him, Braedyn’s father filled his life with activities. Music, martial arts, and, when he was old enough, Braedyn became a Civil Aerospace Patrol (CAP) Cadet, which added another layer of camaraderie and esprit de corps to his life, as well as more discipline and commitment. It was with the CAP that Braedyn discovered his love of flying and as soon as he was old enough he studied for, practiced for, and passed his basic pilot license exam.

Braedyn’s Human/Orion grandmother Sarah was in his life, as was his Vulcanoid Rigelian Grandfather. By teaching him of his heritage, they gave him deep roots. Early on in his life, his paternal Human great grandfather made an appearance. While the rest of the family didn’t think much of Gideon, young Braedyn thought he was ‘cool’. He died when Braedyn was 8 years old. After the pain of this loss subsided, Gideon became a pleasant and foundational memory in Braedyn’s life.

Through his paternal family elders, Braedyn was able to meet the many cousins, aunts and uncles, and great aunts and great uncles, creating a wide family circle for him. Because Vulcanoid Rigelians can live to be between 200 and 250, even as long as 270 years at the eldest, Braedyn had living relatives going back even farther.

But while a large family circle gave Braedyn deep roots and a sense of belonging, it didn’t completely balance out the void left by the absence of his mother. He had only the flimsiest memories of her. He knew nothing about her. Who was she? She wasn’t Human. He learned that when he was older and started asking more questions. Braedyn learned that the unknown DNA in his genetic code was “alien” and that it was likely from his mother, but he didn’t know she was El-Aurian until he was in his 20s, and what did that even mean? Next to nothing was known about El-Aurians in the late 2200s. He learned more as he grew up, but not much, and he’d never met one as far as he knew. Who was his mother? What were her people like? These were questions that plagued him for a good portion of his life. Later he learned that the El-Aurians were more than decimated by the Borg, which probably explained why he’d never met one. But, despite being known as brave and bold, Braedyn felt an anxiety about seeking out actual El-Aurians for the purpose of learning more about them and, until recently, simply avoided the issue.

As an adult, Braedyn had a successful 40 year career as a civilian pilot working out of the Rigel System. He also worked as an Aerospace Safety Officer and Aerospace Accident Investigator for the civilian organizations that employed him. He had relationships; he was married briefly and had a son, Daniel, who he is very close with. He has a granddaughter that he is also close with. Braedyn’s marriage was short, with his then wife divorcing him when Daniel was only three years old. Braedyn’s ex-wife passed away in 2388. Braedyn’s son and granddaughter are still living, as is his daughter-in-law. Being Human, Braedyn’s daughter-in-law looks and feels quite a bit older than both Daniel and Braedyn, something that makes her self-conscious.

After 40 years, Braedyn gave into the restlessness he’d been recently feeling. His wife had left him long ago. His son was an adult with a family of his own. His granddaughter was leaving for the Vulcan Science Academy. After discussing the issue with his family, and with their support, Braedyn decided it was time to move on for a while. He was wondering how best to do that. He was wondering how best to do that when out of the blue he came across a call for experienced pilots to serve in the defense forces of the Nyberrite Alliance. Taking a leap of faith, Braedyn traveled to Nyber and signed up.

If Braedyn was seeking adventure, he definitely found it. It was with the Nyberrite Alliance that Braedyn discovered he was a natural combat pilot. While he took no pleasure in killing, he did find satisfaction in doing a thing well. He was decorated for his service. Starfleet uniform regulations allow him to wear these ribbons/medals on any uniform in which he is permitted to wear ribbons/medals.

In 2346, the Cardassian Union launched an attack on the Federation colony on Setlik III, kicking off a 20+ year conflict known as the Cardassian Border Wars. Braedyn felt he needed to help combat the threat posed by the aggressive Cardassian Union, so he signed on to Starfleet. He was required to enlist rather than receive a commission because he had served in the military of a foreign power. That suited Braedyn just fine. It got him into the fight that much faster and would keep him in the pilot’s seat longer.

Braedyn fought in the Cardassian Border Wars. He was a support craft pilot and also flew corvettes, gunships, light cutters, even medium endurance cutters, on the Federation Cardassian Border. He served on carriers and troop ships and participated in aerospace assaults. He provided Close Air Support for ground forces (Marines, Starfleet Expeditionary Security Forces, SpecOps, etc.). He flew electronic warfare craft and reconnaissance and scout craft. He was decorated for his service. As is often the case with these decorations, they were usually awarded to him when he pulled some hairbrained stunt that saved lives, and somehow survived.

He also fought in the Federation-Klingon War that began in 2372, and in the Dominion War from 2373 to 2375.

In the Second Battle of Chintoka, Braedyn was among a group of Starfleet personnel, Federation Marines, KDF, and Romulan Star Navy personnel who got cut off from escape and were left behind when allied forces withdrew. They were forced to scuttle all of their craft and disappear into the mountains. These brave, stalwart individuals fought a guerilla war against Breen, Dominion, and Cardassian forces until the end of the war. Braedyn was again decorated for his service in both the Federation-Klingon War and the Dominion War.

After a brief period of recuperation, Braedyn took an assignment as a support craft pilot with the Cardassian Reconstruction Mission. He wanted to learn to see the Cardassians as people, to try and understand them, and, he hoped, to see at least some of them as friends. His plan worked and he made several friends and got to be of service to a people clearly in need. He learned about Cardassian culture and society, and he came to understand why they saw things the way they did, and how the Federation might actually be able to help them. By the time he left in 2380 to attend Starfleet’s prestigious Test Pilot School, he felt he had experienced a significant healing of the emotional and psychological scars from his time fighting Cardassians.

Starfleet Test Pilot School was one of the most physically and mentally demanding programs Starfleet had to offer. While Braedyn had kept as current as he could on aerospace engineering, he’d earned his some 80 odd years ago. Fortunately, he’d been studying up in the years immediately preceding his assignment to the school. This allowed Braedyn to keep up with his fellow students.

Braedyn spent about nine years as a test pilot, then became a Flight Instructor and Combat Flight Instructor, teaching enlisted and officer cadets to fly.

By 2397, Braedyn decided he wanted to get back out into space where the action was. He’d also learned that an El-Aurian colony was being set up near the Obsidian Command base. Perhaps now was the time to confront the issue of his El-Aurian background? There was a position open for a Senior Support Craft Pilot so he requested a transfer. His request was processed and accepted and after the graduation of Starfleet Academy Class of 2397, Braedyn set out on his next adventure.
Service Record Education & Training

Martial Arts & Fitness Training

125 years is a long time, so Braedyn has had a lot of time to study things like Martial Arts.

At different times in his life, Braedyn has studied Judo, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu. Jogo Do Pau, Le Canne Vigny, Savate Defense, Paranza Corta, Krav Maga, and Anbo-Jyutsu. He blended some of these and some are very similar to each other. Jogo Do Pau and Le Canne Vigny have several similarities Le Canne Vigny is a French cane fighting style, Jogo Do Pau uses both the 4 to 5 foot staff and 36 to 40 inch canes), Jogo Do Pau (again: a staff and cane fighting style) shares similarities with Anbo-Jyutsu and Aiki-Jo (the Jo Stick style from Aikido). Judo is a sport form of Jiu Jitsu, which is more combat oriented. Krav Maga has similarities to Savate Defense and Jiu Jitsu. Aikido has some knife training, and Paranza Corta (AKA Scherma di stiletto siciliano) is a Sicilian knife fighting style.

Purely for exercise and meditative purposes, Braedyn learned Short Form Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga, and Pilates. This helped him stay in shape when serving on ships without any fitness facilities and often with somewhat cramped interiors.

While trapped on Chin’toka, the KDF warriors trapped there with him invited him to join them in their daily practice of Mok’bara. Braedyn still runs through the forms as a part of his exercise routine.

(In other words, he’s in good shape and he can handle himself in a scrape, but he’s not some kind of 1980s super action movie lead character.)

Music

Learned the Baroque Guitar at a young age.

His training began at the Polar City Music Settlement and continued there until he signed on with the Nyberrite Alliance as a privateer and mercenary. He continued to practice on his own after that.

Work History/Service Record/Chronology

Braedyn has spent his entire adult life (all approximately 105 years of it) as a pilot or otherwise involved in flying and/or flight control. He started out as a civilian co-pilot, before becoming a pilot-in-command. He started this process over again when he joined the Nyberrite Alliance, and again when he joined Starfleet. He has fought in military actions with the Nyberrite Alliance, flown close air support, reconnaissance and surveillance, etc., and then continued to do so for Starfleet in the Cardassian Border Wars, the In addition to small craft, corvettes, and Cutters, Braedyn has served as a relief pilot on larger starships.

Braedyn fought in the Cardassian Border Wars of the 2340s, 2350s, and 2360s. He also saw action in the Federation Klingon War and the Dominion War. Other positions Braedyn has held include test pilot and flight instructor.

Over his career in Starfleet, Braedyn has flown nearly every support craft, cutter, and corvette in Starfleet’s inventory, Space, Orbital, and Atmospheric: Transport Shuttles, Assault Shuttles, Attack/Combat Shuttles/Gunships, Close Air Support, Reconnaissance/Scout Craft, Corvettes, Cutters (mostly light endurance), Search and Rescue, Covert Surveillance, Electronic Warfare.

This was made possible due to the fact that he came to Starfleet qualified to fly many classes of small craft and light and medium endurance freighters and haulers. In many cases, this allowed him to get checked out on various aerospace frames, including specialized mission frames and configurations, in the field rather than having to return to one of Starfleet’s flight schools.

One several occasions, Braedyn served as Executive NCO on Light Endurance Cutters and as Executive Warrant Officer on Corvettes.
