Personality & Traits

General Overview Carwyn is brash, outspoken, and opinionated. He makes certain his perspective on any situation is well known and doesn't hesitate to make a very clear and decisive decision on whatever matters are laid before him.

This gives the impression of arrogance, when in reality he is simply very decisive and processes the detailed computations of any given scenario in his head almost immediately.

His outspoken nature and decisiveness has brought him to the forefront of all of his assigned commands and is the mechanism which has propelled him forward in his career in Starfleet. But what makes him truly valuable to Starfleet is that all of these traits support solid decision-making. He may appear to be rushing to decisions or making analyses that seem to make no sense, but that's simply the way his mind works. His judgement and instincts, to date, have been spot on. It's why he is where he is.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:
- Mathematics. From basic mathematical computation to complicated astrophysics. Carwyn has a gift for mathematical analysis.
- Tactical Strategy. An avid Chess player, Carwyn is very good at being three moves ahead in any engagement.
- Diplomacy. His forward attitude, while sometimes grating, has to date produced significant results in diplomatic scenarios.

Weaknesses:
- Emotional Awareness. Carwyn doesn't compute that his style of leadership makes people feel belittled or less intelligent. It isn't his intention to make them feel that way, he simply lacks that social awareness.
- Physical Combat. He can brain out the best plan of attack on the ground, in the air, or in space but he is woefully inadequate in hand-to-hand, physical combat scenarios. Is aware and makes sure he brings extra security on away missions.
- Purist. He believes so powerfully in the aims of the Federation/Starfleet that it often creates significant friction with some of the less 'Starfleet' aspects of the organization. In particular, the Marines.
Ambitions He wants to be recorded in the annals of Starfleet History alongside names like: Picard, Archer, Kirk, Pike and the like. Carwyn's ambition is less about rank and station and more about making change and furthering the reputation of Starfleet and the Federation.

He's not stopped moving long enough to consider his personal ambitions. But as he's aged he's considered that perhaps he's missed starting his own family.
Hobbies & Interests - Running and Cycling Enthusiast. Can regularly be found running the corridors of his ship. Doesn't bother with the holodeck.
- An avid Chess player.
- Interested in any tactical or strategic based game, regardless of where it came from.

Personal History Carwyn was born in LLandewi Brefi, Wales, the middle of three children. His father, Gareth, bred sheep and managed a small farm that had been in the family for some generations. They lived a very simple life, taking every advantage of the peace, prosperity and freedom that the Federation provided its citizens. Their choice of lifestyle and occupation simply a function of their personalities and who they wanted to be in this world. There were no grand aspirations in the Bowlder household and no pressure from either parent for any of their children to accomplish any more than they wanted to. That held for his brother, Owain, who was keen to take on the family farm. By seventeen he'd already acquired additional acres of land and was building his own farm which he intended to add to the family stead in time. But Carwyn never had those kinds of aspirations.

While all the Bowdler children had their chores to complete on the farm, when he wasn't doing that he passed his time in the various school clubs that piqued his interest. He was on the Chess team, debate team and mathematics team. All three subjects fascinated him, but it was the first and last of those that he was best at. Often competing with himself for the best scores in either branch. His instructors at a young age expected him to follow a path into Engineering or technical design. But he didn't want to be tethered to a lab or an office somewhere. He didn't want to look out of his door every night and see the same landscape he'd seen the night before. He wanted to be on the move. To be somewhere new and exciting every day. To see things few people had and to explore into the unknown, if he could. It wasn't the life that his parents wanted for him, but they supported Carwyn's ambition and helped him on the path to gaining admittance to Starfleet.

Carwyn focused in the academy on Tactical strategy and Operations with a strong secondary focus on the Diplomatic track. There was no real need for him to take on the extra load of a near double-focus but he was so fascinated by it all, having spent his entire life on a sheep farm, that he couldn't stand not doing it. Given his mathematical and strategic aptitude he only found the Diplomatic work a challenge as well as the time constraints of trying to do it all. By his third year, however, his grades had begun to suffer outside his focused courses and he was brought into the Academy counselors office where they 'suggested' (on pain of being failed out) that he reduce his workload. He took the hint and refocused on only Security and Tactical where he only just managed to scrape by on the physical security aspects, only just passing the degree plan because his Tactical strategy scores were so high. He joined the fleet as an Ensign, but was passed over for a Tactical posting and instead sent to the USS Himalaya, a Miranda-class vessel only a few years from decommission as an Operation officer.

On the one hand, Carwyn had spent four years training for a very different path than what he'd been assigned to do. But on the other, he had gotten exactly what he'd wanted - a life exploring the unknown, waking up to a different scene every morning out his viewport window. Accepting that he'd in essence gotten what he'd wanted, he put his nose down and ground on.

Carwyn served five years on the Himalaya before it was finally brought in for decommission and he was rotated into the unassigned pool. He spent the better part of a year on Earth, at Starfleet Command, assigned as a liaison for Academy graduates who needed guidance on what to study. A sort of counselor. One of the perks of being back at Command and with access to the Academy, was access to their simulators and holodecks. So when he wasn't working, he was studying on the holodecks, favoring the tactical scenarios he'd always enjoyed. To his surprise, this was noticed by a few command level officers, one of whom plucked Carwyn out of his reserve officer hell and assigned him as a Tactical officer on his ship - the USS Zeus, a Galaxy-class vessel.

It was exactly what Carwyn wanted to do and he served with distinction for five years before being offered the Chief Tactical Officer posting on the ship that would ultimately define the rest of his careers trajectory - the USS Okuda, a Sovereign-class vessel.
