Personal History | Little is known of ibn Sharjar’s life, it is hard to keep tabs on somebody who makes it his business to avoid official contact at every opportunity. What is known, is that his mother was a Bajoran refugee taken in by his Father’s Bedouin Goum, a ragtag convoy of trading vessels, linked by family ties and cultural heritage. His father was older and a widower, his mother younger and an orphan of the Cardassian Occupation. The unlikely couple struck it off and for the first time in generations an outsider married into the family. A year, in 2340, later Atif came along, followed by his sister Lila. The Goum followed a semi nomadic lifestyle, buying and selling merchandise, trading in commodities, running supply convoys and generally making a living while staying constantly on the move. The outbreak of the Dominion War disrupted much of their trade routes and while they adapted, they still frequented some of the older outposts. In 2374 the family convoy was caught in open space by a Jem’Hadar squadron and wiped out. Including Atif’s wife and two children. Atif, his elder half-brother, Awad, and two cousins were the only survivors, as they had been away on a supply run to collect spare parts for his uncle’s ship. The others sought refugee in the Goum of their Grandmother’s family but Atif left and set out on his own. Some twenty years later Atif ibn Sharjar turned up in the Loki system with a battered trading vessel, the Al Ashra. He makes a living trading goods and cargos in and out of Kalara City and some of the desert oases. It is also rumored he puts his ship into some of the illegal, unsanctioned settlements out in the deep desert and mountains. |
