T'Sai was at the front desk when the door slid open, in walked a tall slim Wadi female. The woman was well dressed, a stylish and expensive gray trouser suit, over a brightly patterned silk blouse, matching purse and shoes with a designer logo, a string of Risan pearls around her neck.
"Can I be of assistance?" T'Sai asked
"I'm looking for Marshal Steiner" the woman replied "Is he available?'
"Chief Steiner is currently off the station" T'Sai responded, looking the woman over
"Do you know when he will be back?"
"I do not, but perhaps I can be of service, Miss An-Hank-Atha?" T'Sai had recognized her as the casino proprietor Steiner had run a background check on.
Hank gave a soft chuckle. "He really did check on my stunner permit then"
T'Sai remained expressionless, just quirked an eyebrow in query.
Hank sighed "Very well, the two men he had an altercation with, I have some information on them."
"Please continue"
"One is called Bluerg Tash, the other one is called Retas or Retos. I do not know his other name. They are crew on a freighter, the Klesdonan" Hank offered
T'Sai entered the data into her terminal. the woman had confirmed the information she had already verified. She added it in as civilian tip entry and linked it to the file.
"I don't know who owns the ship, but it might be some Markaiian company"
T'Sai nodded "Thank you for the information Miss An-Hank-Atha. It will be of assistance with our investigation. Was there anything else?"
"No, I think that was all. I will let you know if I hear any more"
"Very well, the Marshal's Service always appreciates assistance from citizens" T'Sai replied "Good day"
Hank nodded, turned and left. Walking back to the promenade she wondered why she had been specifically instructed to pass on that information. Steiner would have his own sources and probably had identified the pair and their ship within twenty minutes of leaving her place. Although, as far as she knew the ship had not been prevented from leaving the station, so the Marshal had his own motives for that.
She had learned from bitter experience that there were certain instructions that were not to be questioned.
An hour or so after the woman had left the door opened and four young Romulans entered, three boys, Vrekov, fourteen; Pardec, thirteen; Taiebok, ten; and a girl Llunye, twelve, Pardec's sister
LoftHammer entered with a fifth Romulan, another girl, Rhaeina, the youngest at eight, riding piggyback.
"Good morning children" She greeted them. They were orphans whom the Marshals had caught stealing food on the promenade four days ago.
The matter had been resolved amicably and the youngsters now had part time jobs working for some of the food cart vendors.
"Are we going to be thrown in detention now?" The Vrekov, demanded
"Have you been stealing food again?" T'Sai asked
"No! But Nathor and the others are all going down to Obsidian" Vrekov replied
"And we're not allowed to go!" Llunye added, tears in her eyes.
"They said we're not on the approved list to go to the Itonian Settlement and so we have to stay here!" Her brother said
T'Sai looked to Lofthammer, little Rhaenia, gave her a shy wave and she waved back
Lofthammer nodded. "Apparently Nathor's group has been given special approval by the Council in Kalara to settle with the El Aurians. But there were strict limits on the numbers and as our little group here don't have families they were not on the list.
And Nathor's group is getting shuttled down there today. They are all packing up and moving down to the hangers.
The kids can't stay on the environmental level alone, so we're going to have to find them someplace else to live"
"See, I said we are going to be put in detention!" Pardec announced
"You're not going into detention Pardec," Lofthammer told the lad patiently. "We're not arresting you because you're homeless, we just can't leave you on the environmental level alone, now Nathor's not there to look after you "
"Where are we going then?" He asked
"I'm not sure yet, T'Sai and I are going to work on it. But for now, come on back to my office. I'll find you something to eat and we'll see what's on playing on the station kid's channels shall we?"
The group trooped back with the big Marshal, he got them settled in his office with lunch and a movie.
"While it is fortunate for Nathor's group that they have been given permission to settle on Obsidian, that is equally unfortunate for the children" T'Sai commented when he returned "I do not believe we can accommodate them here long term. What do you have in mind?"
"I'm not sure, but we can't leave them to run wild and I don't think it's safe for them now Nathor's leaving" Lofthammer replied. "Normally on a planet we would involve the government social and child services agencies. But that's not an option with Obsidian.
We're also on a Starfleet station, they are set up for their personnel who have families but not for unrelated, unaccompanied minors."
"Starfleet does have Counselling services, they work with both personnel and families I believe." T'Sai offered "It may be possible that they could be off assistance in this matter"
"That's a great idea!" Lofthammer smiled "You'er even smarter than you look"
"I do not believe appearance is reliable measure of innate intelligence or cognitive function" T'Sai replied, looked inquisitive
"It's saying T'Sai" Lofthammer grinned "Pull up the Station Counselling directory and see who we can find to help."
