AWARDS
Silver Quill Medal – Markus, Tara, Endia, Nikki
For an engaging series of posts with a diverse crew, smart dialogues, and a cliffhanger finale that promises the return of a colourful enemy. (M4 Falling Out: “Refractions” thread)

POST SUMMARIES APRIL 2024
Far Afield
Lt. Tobias-Hirsh looks a little deeper into the records than he is permitted to, which results in a new lead. (Nikki)

Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood
Recovering from a night of Karaoke with his Grandmother Ara, Brek runs into Ms. Nobikov who has a proposal for his gallery to suit the coming Engineering conference. (Spiral)

Refractions: Party Crashers
The Bridge Crew of the SS Virgil are hostages, aware of the presence of the Starfleet Away Team who has retaken Engineering. They watch as their captors make new plans to take the hostages and get away via a smaller vehicle… but someone else has beaten them to it. (Nikki)

Refractions: Breaking Point
The USS Pathfinder has run down the clock in avoiding the attack of the stolen Defiant Class renamed the Revenant by Orion Pirates in the Nazar cell. It’s time to decide whether to try and cut losses and deal with the pirates, or to begin to take on more serious casualties and damage they might not be able to come back from. Commander Zahn gets mad, and maybe a little bit even. (Nikki, Sep, Tara)

A Shadowy Start
Following a frustrating situation of seeming denial to his concerns in the Security meeting, Tobias Hirsh is surprised when the XO approaches him in private, initiating a quiet investigation into Captain DeHavilland and her dodgy responses surrounding the events of the fight in the Korix system. (Sep, Nikki)

Passing Go
Ensign Marcello Wiser struggles with expectations and disappointments as he wonders if anyone he invited will show up to his New Years Eve Event. But people surprise him, in the end. (Nikki)

Oddities
A day at work in the Gallery finds Brek eavesdropping unintentionally on a conversation he disagrees with internally, evaluating the new advertisement he’s playing host to, following up on his subversive project against his scammer friends, considering the regift value of a present, and contemplating the possibility of hiring a life coach before deciding there’s not very much any one can teach him, at least not for the value of his latinum. (Spiral)

Refractions: Outnumbered & Outgunned
Nasar’s edge in the fight is lost when help arrives for the Pathfinder in the form of the USS Texas who manages to locate and come to the aid of the beleaguered Nova class. She retreats… for now. (Endia)

Refractions: Damage
While underway to return to base, Calliope gets the initial estimates on repairs and then has a brief chat in the lift with Deputy Lofthammer, where he discourages the natural tendency to second guess decisions after the fact. (Nikki)

QUOTES APRIL 2024
Far Afield
Though himself easily two or even three times the size of SCPO Navine, Tobias felt sheepish, like a kid caught staring off during class. He couldn’t turn and walk away now. He approached the Senior Chief so his embarrassment wouldn’t have to be compounded by calling out across the gap between them in the command center. “Senior Chief Navine.” He acknowledged in return once they were in easy speaking range.

Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood
The memory triggered a vivid mental image – Ara, his infuriating grandmother, subjecting him to a spontaneous karaoke nightmare. He could still practically hear her belting out every Ferengi love ballad known to existence, from the saccharine "Let's Make a Deal" to the off-key "Profit Margin Tango." She'd even dredged up the long-forgotten, ear-splitting classic "Rules Are for Romulans" just to see him squirm.

He wasn't one to go down without a fight, obviously. But aware of his singing voice, which was as melodious as a tax audit in progress, he opted for a different tactic. He unleashed his favorite melodies, blasting Beethoven's 9th symphony first. Ara, however, was allergic to music without lyrics. It was, she had insisted, "a blatant disregard for opportunity! A missed chance to indoctrinate the youth with the virtues of profit, commerce, contracts, and the fine art of pushing boundaries!"

Refractions: Party Crashers
“If we can clear the ice rings in this ship’s hopper, maybe we can get back to Harv. He’ll be spittin’ mud that we couldn’t nab the whole haul, but at least we’ve got prisoners to trade, and that spittin’ Cait with the bounty on her ugly head. Gather up our captives and let's make for the hopper on the subdeck.”

Refractions: Breaking Point
“My crew is dedicated to service – voluntary and free. I’m not leaving you one latnium snip for your coffers, let alone a prisoner.” Having said everything she intended to, Calliope cast an arm outward decisively. “End transmission.”

A Shadowy Start
Thad raised an eyebrow, “As in whatever secret being obscured would have been revealed if he were to remain. He was transferred to keep the secret intact,” Thad replied with a long, slow sigh. They did a good job of sealing up Quinn though. A brig transfer would take some time and would make him nearly impossible to reach unless he went to Sol himself and arranged it with the Lieutenant Commander’s Starfleet assigned council.

Passing Go
Marcello let his hands slide from his face to regard her. His face soured. He wanted to bark that it would just be the two of them, delusionally moving around a dummy piece to pretend to be a third, and no, a game like Monopoly would suck horta eggs with just two players, because it already sucked with any number of players and what had he even been thinking when he even had this level-one awful idea in the first place?

Oddities
Behind him, he could hear Glutik, having a quiet discussion with young Kyrill. It was to do with light and shadow and how their discerning use helped create a mysterious atmosphere. Naturally, with Kyrill’s grimdark preference, dark themes were a favourite. Everyone apparently loved a mystery they were saying. Brek disagreed. Mysteries, that is to say how unaware you are of any given situation, cost money and so it was always preferable to have clarity and knowledge.

Refractions: Outnumbered & Outgunned
“That sneaky little fox.” Revana said, her green hands clenched into fists. She leaned forward and watched the screen as they closed distance on the Pathfinder again. “Give me a ship status report.”

Refractions: Damage
"It's a play." Lofthammer replied. "I've seen that sort of fake run, usually in hostage situations. This kind of resembled one, with the away team in the balance. But the smart criminals know when it's not going to go the way they think. And when they figure that out, the costs run higher. We both know Nazar would have just tried to burn the shuttle with everyone aboard the moment it cleared the rings, no matter what promises you two might have traded. The away team and all of the remaining Virgil crew might have been lost." He shrugged a big shoulder. "Or at least we'd have been trying to run a pretty risky defense covering them."

Calliope sighed, nodding. She'd thought the same at the time, dismissing the idea when it had occurred to her during the negotiations on the skiff. So why was she revisiting it now? "You don't think I could have lied convincingly?"

"Let's just say you're not undercover material, ma'am."
