Personality & Traits

General Overview Oly's personality can prove variable, depending on who's talking to him. He comes off in turn as affable, reflective, cold and outright hostile. The closest to him describe Oly as intense but likeable, with a genuine desire to do right.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:
+ Social: Oly’s reputation as a charmer can come across as a strength or weakness, depending on how one regards him; nonetheless, his ability to ease his way into nearly any given situation has proven beneficial more often than not, and he is not shy to use it to his advantage if circumstances call.
+ Tactical: Oly has repeatedly shown his talent for observation and immediate assessment of any given situation.
+ Spatial Awareness: With an almost inhuman ability to sense he surroundings, Oly has shown a distinct ability of pulling himself out of dangerous situations in the past.

Weaknesses
- Oly has an almost single-minded focus when it comes to assignments. This has proven a detriment several times over his intelligence career when he found himself placed under superior officers more interested in bureaucratic intricacies than actual intelligence work. For all he excelled in developing strategies for assignments, it seemed no one wished to take the chance in actually trusting him with the job when the time came.
Ambitions Ambitions: Oly wants nothing more than to be a success; rank doesn’t matter all that much, just knowing that he completed his mission and achieved the goal set before him.
Hobbies & Interests Hobbies & Interests: Physical engagements – Oly loves rock climbing, hiking, horseback riding, and swimming when he gets the opportunity.

Languages: Fluent – Federation Standard, Siksiká; Conversant - Cardassian, Bajoran, Romulan, Klingon

Personal History On the surface, Oly seems to have an ideal background. Born Sebastiaan Olivier Van Der Laar, he was the middle of three children – the only son at that –in an upper middle-class family, his home on a ranch in Gallatin County, Montana. As a kid, Oly spent much of his time out of doors, playing with friends or doing chores. He excelled at mathematics and linguistics in school, taking advanced courses in operations practice alongside his regular High School courses.

Oly was a Junior when the Federation was pulled into the Dominion war. Eager to do his part, the young man applied to Star Fleet and was accepted; despite being under-age, he had the grades to set him a notch above most. Over his mother’s protests, Oly’s father signed the consent and the near-seventeen-year-old was sent off to Officer Training. It didn’t take his instructors long to peg him for Strategic Operations; Oly surged through his lessons, even stretching to take courses in Intelligence training as well. At the end of his 18 months, the 18-year-old was assigned to the USS Thisbe and sent into action.

A sharp mind and meticulous eye for detail set Oly on a path that promised success. He made a name for himself as a talented officer during times of conflict – earning respect from the corresponding ground forces for his reliable forward reports, and even assisting the Intelligence officers when needed. By time the hostilities had passed, Oly found himself one of the youngest full Lieutenants in recent fleet history.
His promise seemed to falter in the years that followed, however. Where war-time mentality had allowed for a much more direct plan of attack, peacetime proved a challenge for Oly. He chafed at what seemed an overabundance of Bureaucratic interference and began finding himself at odds with his superior officers. He saw a flash of hope when a position for an Intelligence Officer opened on Starbase 84. Transferring upon approval, Oly took a refresher course to bring his certification up to date. For two years he worked to prove himself, but always seemed somehow to fall short. Most often it was a failure to submit his reports in a timely fashion, or issues with training exercises. One way or another, though, Oly pushed through until he finally earned his spot.

Then, on his first undercover mission, everything fell apart. One minute Oly was on the job; the next he was waking up in a bio bed, battered and recovering from blood loss. The official report stated that his cover had been blown, but those behind the scenes knew what Oly could never fully remember. He was pulled from field duty and put back behind a desk – ostensibly until he was declared fit for duty, but that point seemed forever in the future and out of reach. It would be six years before he was pulled aside by his superior and offered a chance in the latest investigation. His place would be NOC – Non-Official Cover. Since he was not currently certified for field work, the office couldn’t give him an official assignment, but he could volunteer – with the understanding that any failure would be wholly on his head. Frustrated with the brick wall of the past years, Oly did not wait to consider the offer, but agreed on the spot. His target – one A’koja Dea, retired Captain.

The assignment proved a bust when an insider was discovered on the ship who nearly blew Oly’s immediate cover; however, certain events leading up to the event had already set Oly on edge, leading him to secretly confide in the ship’s captain. Fortunately, his actions went unnoticed by his superiors and Oly returned to desk duty yet again.

Three years later, Oly found himself grasping at what he was certain would be his last legitimate opportunity at a successful field operation. Tasked with locating a missing Orion hitman, he soon found himself posing as a Diplomatic Attaché with a party bound to the newly-reopened Obsidian Command.

Once again the mission is aborted – this time by another Operations team sent in directly, circumventing the mission as outlined by the team on SB84
