Personality & Traits

General Overview Sikan adheres to the discipline of logic that is the cultural hallmark of the Vulcan people. He believes in the value of logic and rationality and the importance in maintaining discipline over one’s emotional responses. As a security officer, he can appear to be an oasis of calm in the most harrowing scenarios, and has over a decade of Starfleet experience to call upon when necessary.

However, Sikan also has a bit of a fascination with the dark side of things. The macabre, strange and violent are all things that catch his interest. His family and peers considered this fascination when he was younger to be strange verging on morbid, but it’s one of the things that led him into the security field. He’s a student of history and psychology, as well as an avid practitioner of Vulcan defensive arts, and has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the violent history of Vulcan before the rise of Surak.

Though he has yet to perform the ritual of Kohlinar to purge himself of emotions, like most Vulcans, he can seem cold and distant, but he greatly values compassion and justice while deeply disdaining hypocrisy and cruelty. Sikan likes to live a simple, unadorned life. His whole life can fit in a travel case that he efficiently packs in a matter of moments, and that’s how he likes things. His tastes are straightforward and unadorned, though he’s curious about most things. He’s got a very dry sense of humor that dips into sarcasm more than one would expect of a Vulcan, and he’s extraordinarily observant of his surroundings.

He speaks Vulcan, Federation Standard, Romulan, Andorian and is in the process of attempting to learn Klingon.
Strengths & Weaknesses Sikan is a highly-trained student of Vulcan martial arts, including historical skills that have largely been left behind in Vulcan culture. His knowledge of Vulcan history is impressive, and he’s a student of forensic psychology. Like most Vulcans, he has an excellent memory and a disciplined mind. He’s a student of strategy and tactics, and has been well-trained in both ship-based and close-quarters combat.

Sikan’s observational skills are extraordinary, and he has a natural propensity for watching his surroundings closely. Few things escape his notice when he turns his attention to something. His logical and disciplined mind allows him to easily organize a department, manage an investigation and prioritize matters even during times of crisis. This can also cause him to be thrown off-balance when people don’t respond in the most intelligent, thoughtful manner.

However, as a result of his logical focus, Sikan isn’t always a people person. While he’s an effective leader, he doesn’t always find it easy to inspire the people who work under him. Also, his insistence that people match the same level of discipline that he expects of himself can sometimes cause difficulty with subordinates. As a Vulcan he won’t lie under any circumstance, though he isn’t above bending the truth from time to time. He can be a bit of a solitary man, though he’s interested in learning about people.
Ambitions To see more of the universe, to amass what experiences he can, perhaps even to move into command some day, though for now he’s quite content in his current role.
Hobbies & Interests Sikan’s hobbies include reading and studying history, particularly the distant and violent history of Vulcan. He practices the martial arts from his homeworld, including Suus Mahna. Sikan is an avid chess player, and is learning Klingon in an attempt to study the histories and blood opera of their cultures. He discovered quite early on that while the stories interested him, the sound of Klingons singing was quite unpleasant. He also has an Earth domestic feline named Pumpkin. He didn’t choose the name.

Personal History Sikan was born the third of three children in the capital city of ShiKahr, to Adenkar and Pola. Pola worked for the Vulcan Security Directorate as an analyst, while Adenkar was an art professor at ShirKahr Academy. From a young age, Sikan showed a predilection for history, and excelled in his studies. To his parents’ chagrin, however, they found that he was often drawn most to the violent ancient history of Vulcan, before the rise of Surak. The tales of constant battle and skirmishes between different warlords in their quest to conquer Vulcan enthralled Sikan. It was a world far different from the one he knew and loved, but it also spoke to something in his blood. His parents were concerned that he might become V’tosh ka’tur—a Vulcan who rejected Surak’s teachings to embrace emotion. However, in time they began to realize that while Sikan was fascinated by the strange and macabre, he also valued logic and the discipline of Surak’s teachings. They never fully supported Sikan’s interests, but neither did they actively worked to discourage them any longer.

As a student, Sikan was good by Vulcan standards, though generally not exemplary. He was intelligent and focused, but it was clear his heart was set on a different path than one of study on his homeworld. As he grew older, he became more interested in the stars, in what could be found in the wider universe, and what he might be able to see and experience that he couldn’t on Vulcan. As a teenager, it was time to undergo the grueling ritual of kahs-wan and ascend into manhood. Sikan was enlivened by the ritual, which involved traveling into the Forge for ten days without food, water or weapons. The challenge and deprivation of the ritual appealed to Sikan, who felt connected to the ancient Vulcans who contended with such conditions for their entire lifetimes. When he returned to school, Sikan was a more confident young man. His performance in his studies improved, and he focused a specialization on both history and psychology. When his education was over, he moved to the tiny village of Xen’tal to join the Vulcan Institute of Defensive Arts. This was a surprise to his family, who all had expected him to attend ShiKahr Academy, like his brother and sister before him. But Sikan had different plans of his own.

Life at the institute was difficult. Creature comforts were even less available than usual. Students were trained in a variety of martial disciplines, for both armed and unarmed combat. Most of these skills were learned by Vulcans who sought to toughen their body to deepen the discipline of their minds, without ever truly intending to use them in combat. But Sikan fully intended to learn these skills for later use in his intended career. After four years at the Institute, Sikan challenged himself in the Forge one more time, undergoing the Rite of Tal’oth, traveling deep into the heart of the desert with only a single ritual blade as his protection for four months. The experience tasked his mind and body and forced him to call upon the years of training that he’d undergone at the Institute. The man that came back out of the Forge was lean and disciplined, with a clear view of the path his life should follow. He applied to Starfleet Academy shortly thereafter and was accepted.

Sikan attended Starfleet Academy with a specialization in security. He studied tactics and strategy on a grander scale than he ever had before, learned weapons systems and marksmanship, defensive tactics and criminal investigation. Sikan flourished in the Academy, as he drew one step closer to reaching the stars.

Sikan’s first posting was the USS Trial, a Miranda-class ship with a storied history and good crew. Learning firsthand about both the boring drudgery and sudden action of life aboard a starship, Sikan proved to be a valuable officer. The Miranda class ship was a bit older by that point, and Sikan learned how to make the use of older, somewhat fussier equipment. By the time he earned a promotion to Lieutenant, a spot opened up on the USS Hood, an Excelsior-class vessel with even more history.

The years that followed after the Dominion War saw numerous skirmishes with pirates, raiders and rogue factions of soldiers still trying to carve out their own piece of the galaxy. In this respect, service with Starfleet reminded Sikan of the history of Vulcan, and the many battles fought by warlords and dying empires. While he never sought conflict, the fiery part of his Vulcan blood deep down found some sort of peace in this world of excitement. There was always something new to experience, something different and bizarre to learn or witness, and Sikan knew he wouldn’t return home for a long time.

Following his posting on the USS Hood, he was assigned to a First Contact Observation team who would be embedded on the pre-warp world of Pelen IV. The Pelenons were a race of people nearing the creation of a warp drive and as such would soon be contacted by the Federation. The observation team was assigned to live on the planet undercover and study the people and culture, to prepare the Federation for first contact. Sikan was placed in charge of security for the team.

Life on Pelen was different than he’d ever experienced before. The technology was archaic, the people seemed crude and rough, but there was a vitality to the place that he couldn’t deny. He was called upon to utilize his criminal training when one of the scientists on the observation team had gone missing, after running afoul of a local criminal organization in the city where they were embedded. The scientist was recovered and shortly thereafter the Pelenons achieved their first warp-capable space flight and the observation team’s job was done.

Sikan’s next posting was as assistant chief of security on the USS Luna, a Luna-class vessel assigned to patrol and exploration. The six-year posting was the longest of his career, and as assistant chief of security and tactical, he had the opportunity to be involved in a number of operations with the USS Luna. Ultimately, though, Sikan realized that in order to advance further, he’d need to get off the Luna and pursue a chief posting of his own. When Obsidian Command opened up an opportunity, he readily submitted a transfer request.
