Awarded 05 Oct 2022 @ 7:16pm
Nominated by Commander Calliope Zahn
Spiral joins us with a beloved character, Brek, whom the writer is exploring on Obsidian Command as a Civilian, formerly a Starfleet diplomat, but now striking out to seek his fortune as an art dealer. Brek brings a new point of view and is a push and pull of classic Ferengi themes, some of which he embraces and others which he bucks against. Well introduced, this character has us waiting for more.

Not to Mention the Mansion - In this entry, Brek recalls a time when he had wanted to become a homeowner at a bargain price, but changed his mind when he took a tour for himself. A welcome spooky read shared during the end of October.

It's vary rarely noticed, but one of the greatest contributions that can be made in a sim besides, of course, writing, is to be an attentive and encouraging reader. Spiral contributes every month to the recognition of other players by sending along awards suggestions and favorite quotes. This kind of attentive care is quiet, but we each know as writers that it goes a long way when we know there is someone reading our posts and cheering us on. Spiral is a good example to us all.

Bronze Star -Spiral / Brek

Spiral is a wonderful addition to our sim and our community! She has a special penchant for writing Ferengi, whom she enjoys because of their foibles and all of the chances their particular take on the world allows for as they struggle towards gaining their fortunes. But it is us, the readers and her friends, who are made richest as she shares the story of her character, Brek, both past and present. Spiral is also very special to us because she is a good sim *reader* and takes the time to comment and award others for their posts too, building up everyone around her. (Nominated by CO&XO)

It is hard to write a Ferengi. It is hard to write a Ferengi that doesn’t devolve into stereotypes and bad allegories. It’s why we all loved Quark so much, he showed a perfect reflection of a business owner that came to be just a little more human. In the same way I loved Quark, I am coming to love Brek. I don’t have 7 seasons of Brek breaking the mold, but I do have 26 posts (24 of which I need to finish reading) that showcase why Brek is an amazing character you’re going to love. Very deserving of this Bronze Star. (TFCO 72 Miniwara)

For post: Wear and Tear:

When Polar volunteered to write a couple of one-off tailors for a JP Spiral and I had cooked up, I didn’t expect these two. Messrs. Fulcrum & Gilroy were hilarious to interact with, and their back and forth with Brek delightfully side-splitting. I didn’t want the post to end. (nomination by David)

For the Post "Wear and Tear" particularly for the humor and character follies throughout as Moon tries to help Brek address the poor craftsmanship of the suits he was sold, and the tailors responsible try to argue their way out of responsibility until other facts come to light to help persuade them to change their minds... This is a post that pours on the descriptive detail and carries out characterizations to playfully ridiculous levels.

The post "Count Oroff" is a wholly enjoyable read peppered throughout with humorous narration, an interesting person in Count Oroff, the title character, and a mysterious situation. The post's wisdom lies in the age old advice, "witness nothing, you live longer", but still leaves Brek, and the reader, unable to help wondering what has really transpired in the wine cellar...

Latinum Heart

From Rule of Acquisition #75 “Home is where the heart is, but the stars are made of Latinum.”
Awarded because Spiral has a heart of Latinum, but also for Brek who has struck out among the stars to seek his fortune, and whether he likes it or not, he still has some heart. But we do hope Brek is careful with that heart of his, because as rule #285 states, No good deed ever goes unpunished…

“Spiral understands Ferengi and clearly loves them in spite of, or maybe because of, all their greed and idiosyncrasies. Even though Brek keeps trying to let his heart be as cold as the freezing temperature of liquid latinum, he just can’t seem to turn away the hard luck cases. Maybe it’s because he has all those memories of when someone did the same for him. Maybe it’s because he’s still hoping for some kind of quid pro quo. Maybe it’s some bad juju, or some poorly aged cheese he ate. Whatever. He’s going to make his fortune anyway. One day.
Spiral’s writing voice is fun and she meanders through the story with interesting stops along the way. Her dialogue is often playful or poignant.”

Since joining the sim, Spiral has conceived of playing Brek simultaneously in the present as well as in the past. This being a character she also writes in another venue in the future yet from OC, makes even his current plotline with us itself a backstory! (backstory inception!!!) While she gradually unspools his past as a young ferengi first striking out on his own, Spiral truly takes us through his experience as a naive fortune seeker, with all of his ups and downs, and it seems that no matter what period of his life you choose to look at, Brek always has and probably always will, find himself in some entanglement or another… with the luster of latinum ever just out of his reach.

When we started doing the sim’s monthly reports as our own news items, our sim activity was a little slower and there wasn’t always very much to the reports. But as the sim has grown with new players and new activity, keeping up with the monthly reports has been something difficult for just one person to do! Thankfully there have been those who have come along to help make sure their fellow players’ best work is featured and awarded. Spiral is one of the most faithful to regularly send in quotes to highlight, posts to feature, and award nominations to consider. This effort is much appreciated across the sim, and I believe a vital piece of our shared motivation as writers. Thank you, Spiral! (nominated by GM team)

For the post "Cast Away"

Three amusing characters in the persons of Oroff, Desha, and young Brek in his years as an accountant, negotiate the situation as the two young Ferengi are loaded into a transport to take them away to Happy Trails Farm. While this post is mostly full of character, there are undertones of mystery as something fishy is going on at the boss’ house which leads him to want to send his daughter out of harm’s way. Dashes of stinging wit will keep the reader smirking.

Brek – Obsidian Command (nominated, unelected)

Have you ever met a Ferengi art dealer? Did you know there was such a thing?

Brek is the proprietor of ‘Timeless Treasures Art Gallery’ on the Promenade of Obsidian Command. Through this character, Spiral has taken us a wonderful journey through the life of a Ferengi that might not be quite what you’ve seen, or heard of before.

We all have our preconceived notions of what a Ferengi is, based on what we’ve seen in the shows and movies and we’ve all seen the cliche renditions of that written in prose about this community. But, I can assure you, you have never read and felt for a Ferengi genuinely until you’ve read the story of Brek.

Spiral is a gifted writer, and a great story teller. All in a language that isn’t even her native one! I think Spiral has created one of the most unique and enjoyable storylines I’ve read in a long time. That is why I’m nominating her for this prize.

Like many great Trek characters before him, Brek is a character full of contradictions. Brek has the ears for profit, but with tremendous heart. That Spiral can deftly execute on this precarious balance in every post is an inspiration.

“Igor” shows Brek cleverly planning to use his own client’s money against her will to hire her son to paint. Wonderful twist in a weirdly positive way as it shows Brek both being antagonistic while at the same time acting in a kind of sneaky benevolence.

Here’s a real character… The perfect balance between laugh-out-loud stereotyping (Brek’s a Ferengi business owner) and heartfelt relatability (he’s driven to earn his fortune to become a potential suitor to a secret love and also lives under the expectations of an overbearing grandmother). Brek often finds himself being charitable, even though the word charity itself makes him so sick that he refuses to pronounce it. Although his art gallery has its good days and its bad, out of character, Brek has a posting ledger well in the black filled with enjoyable storytelling! Character of the Year would suit Brek well, and one way or another, he’d find a way to profit off the title. A grade A character and a good investment. (Tell Brek I sent you. I want my discount.)

Spiral – Obsidian Command
Spiral is a breath of fresh air, offering a genuine and fun loving spirit to simming with quick wit, playful solo storylines, and amusing PCs and NPCs. She’s so unassuming, making her an understated gem of a player, who prefers to put the polish on others! Every month she faithfully recommends things to feature and awards for her fellow writers, building up the game and growing everyone’s confidence, and more often than not, she jumps in on invitations for joint posting or a collaborative thread, volunteering to play supporting characters with others. She’s a faithful reader, giving attention to her fellow players and motivating us to tell our stories, because she cares. It’s players like Spiral that make simming a fun and enduring hobby and every game needs the kind of spirit she brings in order to thrive!

Spiral – Brek

Brek's writer, Spiral, is a steady mainstay of the sim who submits engaging posts with humorous or touching characters. She's great on her own character solo threads and backstory and also in participation in joint posts and plot items, where she takes on NPCs to be helpful and brings life to those characters as well. Via contributions to our monthly reports (found in our news items) she regularly submits quotes and awards for her fellow writers and builds others up. She's an authentic, kind, and creative person and OC is lucky to have her.
