All that considered, she really had some trouble sleeping, considering Oswalt might be called on to react as quickly on the helm controls as he could with his smart mouth.

There was a large screen in the living room. He switched it on and he selected the ‘Inconvenient Truth’ network, a popular Ferengi news channel. He figured that, with the help of a glass of wine to fog his brain a little, it would be fun to spend an hour or so listening to the hurried and corrupted affairs of the Ferengi Alliance.

Sadly, just at this moment, there was a loud knock at his door.

“Everything in diplomacy is language, not just the words coming out of our mouths. Clothes, food, showing up early, right on time, or late – or even not showing up at all. It speaks. To some on the planet uniforms might say, ‘I represent the people who can drop a load of Marines on your head in an instant.’”

“To the refugees it could also mean, ‘Trust us. We’re here to help,’” Izatti said and then her eyes widened. “I mean, not that I would question your expertise.”

He smiled again, this time warmly, “Not at all. Even experts need to be questioned from time to time. Don’t ever feel like you need to hold back. Plus, you’re not wrong about the uniform, but right now I would prefer people forgot I was in Starfleet.”

"So you are interested in our Christmas traditions," Lena started. "It is all about bringing happiness to others. It is as simple and as difficult as that. Would you like something to eat?"

"Yes, please." Once she had presented him with a slice of ginger cake, he resumed the conversation. "Why do that only one day per year? And why did you place a festive tree outside, and not inside your house?"

"It's called sharing," she told him, looking perfectly amicable.

"Your sharing could be seen as an attempt at corrupting young Ferengi minds, by imposing your Terran traditions on our planet."

A little frown appeared on her face. "Life and cultures are meant to be mixed. Look at it this way, your people brought latinum to every quadrant. You wouldn’t think of it as being imposed. It is proposed. You take it, or you leave it. Do not torture yourself too much. There are times when the best thing to do is to enjoy the present moment. Be in the here and now, at peace with yourself."

“What am I looking at?” Brek asked, making an effort not to use the word ‘junk’. One would have thought that travelling peddlers, those old tired animals, had gone extinct centuries ago. But by the look of it, some rare specimens had survived. Still, bric-a-brac was better than knives and cudgels.

“You are looking, my dear Sir, at a fine collection of metaphorical idioms. Most of them are from Earth. Fleeters in particular, are very fond of them.” Smirker added. “Take this one.” He took a blue moon. “It sends a message: ‘Once in a blue moon’, without saying a word. Quiet and efficient. What about this one?” He now produced a white elephant. “The elephant in the room.”

“I had one of those, once,” Brek admitted.

“It doesn't hold a candle to spring wine. I prefer the company far better than the food and drink. Let my money go to the cause, not these over-hyped vinegars.

The swirling gases of the nebula seemed close enough to touch through the viewport of the USS Pathfinder as she stood there, leaned against the edge of the portal into the void, staring into its depths as if she might devine the answers to their situation or the future that was waiting for them if she stared long enough.

Praising the gods for their foresight to not give her a roommate, for that would have been a nightmare of monumental proportions.

Her paranoia had caused her to shut herself off from the rest of the world to the best of her ability, and she had quite some ability.

She was a biologist, she knew what sorts of nastiness could grow in the dark corners of the universe.

As some historical figure was supposed to have said, no plan actually survived contact with the enemy.

If it was painted, then she reckoned that fur painting and decoration might be a sign of status among the species. They couldn't be tattoo'd like some cultures were, because the tattoos wouldn't be seen through the fur. Unless it affected the follicle of the hair.

"It's not impossible" Hannah mused aloud as she watched the computer paint the lines of phosphorescence on the model. Continuing on that train of thought she spoke "I wonder if it's a vanity thing, or if they have meaning of some sort."

A brief pause and then she asked the computer "Computer, is the retinal structure of the eye sufficient to see the light from the phytoplankton without the need for additional light sources?"

"Affirmative. There is a faceted chamber within the space between the iris and the cilliary body of the eye that appears to collect the non-visible spectrums of light."

"So, the patterns would be visible to her all the time, regardless?"

"That assumption is permissible given the single subject data."

"Interesting. Maybe they're more like us than they seem."
