Aaron joins us as Sikan, a Vulcan who has a particular interest in criminal psychology and a focus in the study of hitting people artistically (...Martial Arts). His initial posts are both cerebral and clever as he begins his new role of Chief of Security. These first posts are already beginning to illustrate links between the character and the wider world, drawing wonderful narrative connections in hi-definition, particularly in the detailed metaphor between the testing of the acuity of his martial arts training and his present assessment of the security situations confronting the station he must help to keep safe. |

Obsidian Command’s Chief of Security, LtCmdr Sikan, contemplates his final martial arts test back on Vulcan from the current perspective in his new assignment to protect the lives aboard the stardock space station. This entry clues the reader in to the mind of Sikan, where he draws a defensive circle around his new post and contemplates the dangers that surround. For "Ride-Along: The Hard Way" This is a post in the action genre, but it takes its time to also be funny and smart. Sikan manages to guide but ultimately play the cool observer as the situation unfolds. Tann takes on a teaching role, but takes the wheel and proves his own high level of skill. This post, and the series it is part of, demonstrates that competence is more than just pips on your collar and suggests this particular set of characters might develop into something more than the chain of command alone can account for. |

Cat Dad Award Because Aaron has cats irl, and ic Sikan also has a black cat named Pumpkin who judges him (a very fitting pet for a Vulcan). There’s something about cats and being a cat person— it’s a perfect example of being both high on neuroticism/ anxiety but building your competence and confidence anyway! It might seem impossible, but it’s how cats get by, and some of us people too. “While Sikan is true to the Vulcan nature, Aaron leverages description and 3rd person internal narrative and doesn’t shy away from Sikan having something to say. Sikan looks every bit like a typical cold blooded elf eared classic to most, while being somewhat of a black sheep among his kind. Also everyone on the leadership team had to notice the cat in the bio first. It just really stood out as the right touch for this character to be a cat owner. Something that Aaron does really well in all his writing, I think, is striking the perfect balance between research and invention. He anchors the setting and the reality and the context but launches off from there. I have also always enjoyed his attention to voice in his narrative and rhythm and pacing in his dialog, and anticipate more of this in future posts with us!” (Awarded Feb '23 During the "Share the Love" Event) |
